The Dream
This particularly well informed client enlisted our services, following extensive research in the V&A Archives. He hoped to fulfill a long term ambition to create a superlative panelled study / private consultancy studio in the grounds of his period home. This was to be faithful to the ‘Golden Age’ of the Georgian master craftsmen; proportion, finish, and that indefinable sense of quality were essential.
The Challenges
The building in question was a new-build, stand alone structure within the curtailage of a fine period property. A number of planning constraints had been imposed including ceiling height restrictions. All proposals had to be compliant with current building control legislation from surface spread of flame on the wall panelling to head height above pitch line on the staircase. Underfloor heating was incorporated within the subfloor and allowance had to be made for some very sophisticated electrical equipment.
The Solution
Initially attracted by the Handworked English Oak Floors from our Conservation™ Range, our client selected the Elizabethan shade, random width boards, and specified long lengths.
We were subsequently commissioned to produce a fully panelled interior incorporating hand French polished, swirl mahogany panels (slip matched around the entire interior, including an exterior door and a fire door to a triple garage), a curved string staircase c/w dancing steps, graduated balusters (individually turned to an Early Georgian original pattern), solid brass stair rods set in hinged holders (cast from originals using the lost wax process), dado panelling and hand carved Handrailing which curved in two planes.
